RHS Bridgewater is the fifth RHS garden and one of the largest gardening projects undertaken in Europe in recent years. The transformation of this 154-acre green space was designed to enrich the lives of local communities and their environment for the future.
Landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith has created the overall plan, in which the Walled Kitchen Garden has been restored, historic features such as the tree-lined Garden Approach recreated, and the lost terraces reworked. Marcus Chilton-Jones has been appointed as the first curator.
Contour Chairs and Vine Tables were specified through Southerns Broadstock for the project. The chairs compliment the buildings striped facade and have a unique transparent quality which allows them to blend into the beautiful surroundings.
Bespoke colours were selected for The RHS. Please see product pages for standard colour options.
‘Often outdoor poly or metal chairs impose on a space, blocking of views to the surroundings, wire chairs however have a transparent appearance allowing both rain and light to easily pass through and visually open up a space. As with Contour at Bridgewater, visitors to the garden get a better view of the wonderful plants and landscape on show.
When photographing the project I was pleasantly surprised by the placement of colour, the chairs blending into the different spaces with chameleon like effect. On the verander; sitting blue along the water, terracotta against the building and dark grey in between. Whilst in the Garden Cottage Café; dark grey and terracotta mixed and matched to the speckled brick wall.
RHS Bridgewater is the largest project we have completed (with Contour and Vine) to date, and the first time I had seen so many of the chairs together. I noticed an interesting harmony between the rippling of water and repetition of curved lines that make up the chairs.
It was an honour to be a part of such a prestigious project, and truly breathtaking to walk around the space in admiration of the level of curation and with what careful precision the gardens have been designed.’
